Creative Practice

I've been a speech and debate coach for 26 years. I've coached dozens of State Champions, Five National Semifinalists, and Three National Finalists. I've coached collegiate Debaters of the Year, and Regent's Cup champions. Coaching speech enables me to do creative work, coaching not just argumentation, but performance. 

Speech and Debate has been a massive creative outlet for me since my own high school years. People tend to think of the activity as debates and arguments, but they don't know that there is an enormous amount of dramatic performance as well. Two of my high school National Finalists achieved that recognition in Dramatic Interpretation. 

Speech and Debate allows me to help students hone their skills in research, argumentation, writing, rhetoric, and performance. The activity promotes an extraordinary set of skills, and I am proud to coach a wide variety of events with a strong record of success.

I love and appreciate the art of photography. I freelance as a portrait artist, specializing in creative photography for graduates, professionals, families, and events. I also enjoy taking photos of the beauty of my desert home. Some of my images can be seen on the right. 

I often make use of studio lighting, both on its own in-studio, as well as mixed with ambient or natural lighting to produce interesting portraits with depth and character. From branding design, to marketing materials, and award-winning advertisements, my design portfolio is a point of pride. I have been primarily responsible for the branding and marketing materials for my summer speech and debate institute, for my own freelance photography, and for the Arizona NSDA district committee. My advertising for the Arizona District national qualifiers has won recognition each year as among the best district ads. 

I have designed postcards, brochures, stickers, imprints, logos, banners, table drapes, banner ads, print ads, and websites. Making beautiful and eye-catching designs is something I deeply enjoy.
